Seek Advice From Multiple Sources
This one will be short and sweet, but still very important. I’ll cut right to the chase.
When you start working out for the first time, it can be overwhelming just having access to so much information. Youtube, Tik Tok, Instagram, Reddit, etc. So many different personalities, so many different options. You may even have people in real life at the gym or people you know who are trying to give you guidance on what to do. Here’s my advice on that: pick and choose your workout knowledge from multiple sources.
Take me for example. I started doing pull-ups because my brother-in-law touted them (and I always thought they looked cool). I started doing pull-ups in between each set because a guy named Don that I befriended at the gym mentioned that if I wanted to increase pull-ups, I should do them in between each set. I also structure my workouts to do two warm-up sets followed by two working sets of 6-8, and then when I hit 8, i increase the reps. I learned this from two brothers who went to the same university as me. If Iook at my entire workout and diet as a whole, nearly everything has a different source.
With the above in mind, I think the same should apply for anyone getting started. Try everything. If you see a Youtuber do something, try it for a few weeks. Don’t do the exact same things that one Youtuber does or one fitness guru on Instagram touts. Try multiple things and implement what works for you. There’s nobody out there following my same exact workout and diet, and that’s pretty cool to think about, because I’ve adopted something that works specifically for me through trial and error, and I think that’s one of the most effective ways to make progress. There is no one size fits all when it comes to fitness :)
As always, reach out if you have any questions.
